A Pair of George III Ormolu-Mounted Cut-Glass and Blue and White Jasperware Candlesticks, Circa 1790
Each with nozzle and drip-pan above a star-cut pan hung with droplets, on a foliate-cast stem and pedestal with ram’s mask angles above panels depicting children, on a moulded canted square plinth, on ball feet. The jasperware pedestals on this pair of candlesticks are similar to those on a pair of candelabra, sold at Christies London 10 April 2003, which were stamped Wedgwood. The antique alter pedestals of blue and white jasperware depict scenes of Domestic Employment, derived from designs by Elizabeth, Lady Templetown (d. 1823) whose involvement with Josiah Wedgewood commenced in 1783. A candlestick with an almost identical pedestal is illustrated in J. Bourne and V. Brett, Lighting in the Domestic Interior, London, 1991, p. 120, fig 400.
